Company Stories We Invest In: Coca-Cola Company

The American corporation Coca-Cola, headquartered in Atlanta, needs no introduction, but did you know that...?

Coca-Cola's most famous beverage, invented by pharmacist John Stith Pemberton in 1886, was intended to alleviate headaches and was primarily sold in pharmacies as a medicinal drink. The name derives from its two main ingredients - coca leaves and kola nuts. Coca leaves contain cocaine and kola nuts contain caffeine, providing a stimulating effect.

In 1906, the cocaine content was removed, leaving only the flavor.

Pemberton's heirs sold the brand and formula to American businessman Asa Griggs Candler in 1892. The sale was completed in 1889, and in 1892, the Coca-Cola Company was officially founded.

Around 1900, the company began selling syrup to independent bottling companies that purchased its license. Since then, the company has operated a franchised distribution system, producing syrup concentrate sold to various bottlers worldwide. Coca-Cola bottlers manufacture the final product from the concentrate in cans and bottles, combining it with filtered water and sweeteners. The products are then sold and distributed to retail stores, vending machines, restaurants, and foodservice providers.

The entire world became acquainted with the beverage during World War II when the aim was "for every American soldier to be able to buy a bottle of Coca-Cola for 5 cents, regardless of where they serve and how much it costs the company."

Since 1919, Coca-Cola has been a publicly traded company. It's considered one of the world's most valuable brands. The current CEO of the company is Muhtar Kent.

However, the company has one drawback - it's the world's largest producer of plastic waste.

Over the years, Coca-Cola has acquired many companies for enormous sums. One of these was Costa Coffee, which in August 2018 agreed to an acquisition for £3.9 billion.

Coca-Cola has paid dividends since 1920 and increased them every year until 2020 for 58 consecutive years.

Coca-Cola's Christmas advertising is one of the most successful ads in history. It's also celebrated for its impact on popular culture and society as a whole. Well, who doesn't have Christmas associated with the Coca-Cola truck?
